Saves and innings

By Tangotiger, 05:11 PM

Dave Smith of Retrosheet posted some interesting data, which I simply aggregated as:

IP         1.0-    1.1.2    2.0+      1.0-    1.1.2    2.0+
Gossage     117    68    125        38%    22%    40%
Sutter      112    58    130        37%    19%    43%
Smith       309    75     94        65%    16%    20%
Fingers     140    66    135        41%    19%    40%
Quiz         84    40    120        34%    16%    49%
Eck         284    78     28        73%    20%    7%
Hoffman     446    48      7        89%    10%    1%

The first set is the number of saves at 1 inning or less, 1.1 or 1.2 innings, and 2+ innings.  The next set is the percentages.

This is the number of innings pitched, while picking up a save:
593 Smith
547 Fingers
505 Hoffman
487 Gossage
478 Rivera
473 Sutter
432 Eck
422 Quiz

And here’s the Mariano data:
Rivera had 11 saves where he pitched at least 2 innings,

345 of at most 1 inning

and 87 in-between:

PI also lets you sort through the playoffs, which I didn’t do here.
