Sabermetric awards

By Tangotiger, 10:23 AM

Sabermetric award: Best Novel Research Article/Project:

Original sabermetric research that enhances our understanding of some general aspect of baseball. These studies should help establish new sabermetric principles, metrics, techniques, or perspectives. Think “breakthrough research” when nominating this category.

It was an extremely close vote both internally and externally, but congrats to Victor Wang for winning this category.  Very important work for those of us who like to judge player moves by the big clubs.

Not to take anything away from Victor (or any of the other nominees), but upon revisiting the top placers for the write-up, I have to say that I was also extremely impressed with Josh Kalk’s Injury Zone article.  It’s one of things that might not currently “work,” but has exciting promise and could potentially save careers.  I love the idea of a laptop in the dugout that starts flashing warnings when a pitcher’s arm starts to encounter trouble. smile

I think Josh Kalk’s “Injury Zone” article may be the most important sabermetric work of the year.  It’s too bad he never got to follow up on it publicly, but it’s also great that teams are paying attention to that kind of work and taking an interest in putting it to use.

Congrats to Victor and Dave, and to all the authors.  There’s some really great work there all around, and I’m glad I got exposed to the stuff there that I had missed when it came out.

Why wasn’t “anything not written by J.C. Bradbury” nominated?

I’d like to congratulate Tango on receiving our BtB Saber for Best Sabermetrician. Lots of competition, but you came out on top in a close race. Hope you enjoy the Saber we sent in the mail!

Congratulations, Tango!  You deserve it.  I have only been lurking here for about a year, but the quality of discussion is unparalleled.  You are the preeminent influential voice for a generation of internet sabermetricians.

For what it’s worth, I think that you should open comments on the thread where you acknowledge your victory.  What are you hiding from?
