By Tangotiger, 06:41 PM

Tell ‘em “I heard it from Tango”:

Here’s the blurb:

The Cleveland Indians are currently scouting for a summer Intern in Baseball Analytics to work in our Baseball Operations Department. This individual will report to the Assistant General Manager and Director of Baseball Operations while assisting both the Baseball and Information Systems Departments.

The intern will primarily focus on compiling and analyzing data to assist the department in its development of various statistical and financial models, in addition to performing other baseball-related research projects. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, minor league game-charting, filing, copying, preparing daily press clippings, and general administrative support of baseball department.

Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse team of sports professionals and possess exceptional organizational and computer skills. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or other database software, and proficiency in statistical analysis software packages (STATA, SAS, SPSS) are required. Candidates with a degree (undergrad or graduate) or extensive background in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Econometrics, Economics, or Finance are preferred. A familiarity with current baseball research and analytics is also preferred.

The internship runs from June through the end of the baseball season (can work to accommodate students with school commitments in September) and requires that the intern-who is expected to work long hours including many evenings and weekends throughout the summer-relocate to Cleveland, OH for that time. A monthly stipend and housing assistance are provided. Where was this 5 years ago when I would actually have been able to do it?  Live in Cleveland, work for the Indians, play around with SPSS, and get paid?  I’m tempted to do it now…

I’m banking on the Tango rub, because I have to assume they’ll get more impressive resumes than mine.

Heck, I’d do it myself, but I don’t have nearly the qualifications…

Not directly related, but interesting:  Keith Woolner is going to work for the Indians.

Guy, I moved your post to this thread.

Re: the intern position.  Of you guys who had contact with them, feel free to share your experience.

Re: Keith.  Obviously a good hire.  They definitely have a solid team working there.  On top of the Indians, the Redsox, Cardinals, and Padres are probably all up there as well.  A’s, D’Rays, Reds, Mets, Yankees and D’Backs too, probably, but I don’t have enough contact with them.

I don’t know anything about any other team to say one way or the other.  So, if you are looking to work for an MLB team, I’d go with the list above.
