Psst… (also) wanna work for the Pittsburgh Pirates?

By Tangotiger, 05:24 PM

Thanks to wes:

This position is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of the Pirates360 unified player management and scouting system. Under the direction of the Director, Baseball Systems Development, this individual will complete programming tasks to implement and maintain a system that will support the Pirates player evaluation, selection and development efforts. This position will also be involved in software development efforts on other applications within the Pirates organization as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
* Assists in the development of the player management system using Visual Studio 2008, C#, SQL Server 2005 and the .NET Framework. Makes use of…

This is a Microsoft platform.  Tell ‘em you heard it from Tango… it might help.  I hope someone here gets it.  We’ve gotten a few people hired at MLB through this blog, and I’d love to play a tiny role in these things.

Thanks for posting Tom.

I don’t know anything about computer programming, but I’m definitely interested in anything else that comes up. In ‘08 I interned with the Mets in the Media department and will be graduating from college in December.

I’m guessing that MLB in general (i.e. all teams) run on the MSFT stack? I saw a Rangers opening that had similar requirements.

Someone needs to sell these folks on the beauty of python + postgres!

I think most of the beauty of python and postgres and stuff underneath it, like Apache and Linux is it’s cost of ownership, especially when compared to the MS alternatives.  We’re talking about entities that typically spend in excess $100M on the top 40 employees in the organization, so I’m inclined to think that they may not be concerned with the cost of their software.

That being said, I’m almost sure that the person who gets this job will take it for less than his/her market value.

Well, it is the Pirates we’re talking about.

wes: cost is a huge issue.  A few years ago, someone was telling me that in one of the MLB offices, they were going through priceline to try to get the best deals on airfare and hotels.  They try to save everywhere, except on the players.

Basically, think of MLB as a very small business, with small business concerns, except for their players and GM.

Tom,

You make a good point and I’m sure you’re right.  This, of course, is exactly why teams are hiring people like Dan and yourself to figure out how to maximize ROI on the more expensive assets.

I guess it also explains why you haven’t quit your day job yet grin

This job is a perfect fit for me; too bad it’s in Pittsburgh wink.
