Politics: Today’s “I can’t believe they said that”

By Tangotiger, 09:26 AM

This is a nonsports entry.  If you don’t want to join the party, don’t be a party-pooper.  Just skip it.

On Meet The Press, a U.S. politician said this regarding Iraq:

SEN. DeWINE: But you know, on reflection, this is their country. There’s a lot of things going wrong. You blame someone who is there. Still does not change that we’re not in Iraq primarily for the Iraqis. We’re in Iraq for us. We’re—have to do what we have to do, and it goes back to what the three generals—three military leaders said. It would be a total disaster for us to leave. It is in our self-interest, the interest to protect American families, that we are in Iraq.  That’s why we’re there.

Wow.  “On reflection” this is their country?  On reflection?

“We’re in Iraw for us”?  Wow.  For us?

“Our self-interest”?  Double-wow!  These are typically words of an invading-and-occupying nation, that the interests of the occupier takes precedence over the citizens of that nation.

I know that most people (in USA and in Iraq) believe that the “coalition” forces should leave, but for a U.S. senator to actually say on national televison, in the context of a political show, that he has to think about the citizens of Iraq owning their land, and that the U.S. must remain an occupying nation for their own self-interests ahead of Iraqis is..... triple-wow.

Of course that doesn’t mean that leaving Iraq is in the self-interest of the Iraqis. Unless an all-out civil war and the increased recruiting power of terrorist organizations is what they want…

I’m not sure about one of your wows. Are you saying that the decision to invade Iraq was not made primarily (or exclusively) on their opinion about what was best for the US? And that a decision to leave Iraq will not be similarly based?

I know they like to say part of the reason was out of concern for the repressed and persecuted Iraqi people under a mean dictator, but that’s just PR talk.

"Of course that doesn’t mean that leaving Iraq is in the self-interest of the Iraqis.”

No, but it DOES mean that U.S. Senator Mike DeWine doesn’t care whether it is or isn’t in the Iraqis’ self interest.  And to the extent this reflects the views of his party, it severely undermines Republican claims that staying is good for the Iraqis, since American self-interest would presumably justify lying about Iraqis’ “real” interests.

DSG:  Aren’t you too young to be a Republican? :>)

The interests of the U.S. is completely irrelevant to their stay in Iraq, unless they consider their stay in Iraq an invasion-occupation.  Regardless, the decision is up to the Iraqis.  (Normally, by a nation’s government, but such a government can certainly be influenced by the occupying power.)

The Senator’s remarks however is tantamount to declaring an occupation of a foreign nation.  And I can’t believe Tim Russert let that slide.  It’s almost like we are all supposed to know and accept that the U.S. is an occupier, but we’re not supposed to say it so clearly.  And if someone says it, just ignore it.

Oh, I’m not Republican, and it so happens that I don’t really disagree with anything stated in this thread thus far. It’s just that some things are right even if the intentions behind them are wrong.

For me, the “wow” is that this Senator just got caught accidently telling the truth.

DSG Republican?  Come on!  He is way too smart for that!

Anyway, Tom, more and more young people are conservative and Republican.  Are you still living in the 60’s?

If he’s a Democrat or a journalist, then by definition he’s living in the 60’s.
