NHL v IOC

By Tangotiger, 12:18 PM

Great piece by Tyler.  I just want to focus on this little thing:

What’s to stop the players from organizing a sixteen team international tournament, with the money divided up amongst the players who participate, in August of every fourth year?

This is essentially the Canada Cup / World Cup, right?  The only thing stopping the players is if they have a contract as per CBA that precludes them from playing without consent of the NHL. Which I guess is the case.

And so, they are precluded from Olympics without consent of the NHL.

Which means, the NHL needs to get paid.  They get their fair share from the Canada/World Cup.  They get likely very little from the IOC, which is their problem.  But, their problem also is that the players will put pressure on the NHL to allow Olympic participation, to the (monetary) benefit of the IOC.

yeah, definitely interesting. it seems most of the arguments come predicated on the notion that fans care more about international hockey than the NHL.  is that true for most hockey fans?  i’m pretty much the opposite.  i’ll watch olympic hockey because it’s a quality sports competition but i’m not too concerned with who wins.

The order would be:

- Stanley Cup
- World Cup
- Olympic gold
- NHL regular season
- World Championship

world cup over olympics?  thats interesting.  altho i’m probably saying that only because of the 1980 miracle on ice being the only international hockey game i have any familiarity with.

its a real tough balance to strike, and its something i’m actually glad the NFL doesn’t have to deal with.  for baseball, the WBC is a good idea and i absolutely 100% think expanding the global presence of baseball is in MLB’s best interests (and baseball in general as a sport), but do i want any Mets playing in it?  no way.  i’d much prefer they stay home.

anyway, that tangent was probably unnecessary.  still cool to read this about this stuff here since i dont read up on hockey much anywhere else.
