Lists, baby, lists

By Tangotiger, 03:50 PM

The Least/Most [some trait] in [some region or theme] of [some time period]

People just love lists.  That’s probably because people want things compartmentalized, and don’t want to let the author bring them on a journey (because they don’t necessarily trust the author to deliver).  So, we have lists.  Lists, lists, lists.

This week, it’s “hated”, “US sports”, “recorded history”.  Have fun.  Or avoid.  I’m avoiding.

Anything that reminds me of this play can’t be all bad.

When I wrote for Bleacher Report after they asked me to be a “featured columnist”, they constantly sent out emails to the writers reminding us that slideshows and lists are very good for driving traffic. We were also reminded to keep our paragraphs short.

My personal stance was to say that dumbing down our content just meant we’d be dumbing down our audience. It seems they may have just been trying to keep up with SI and ESPN.

It seems to be a combination of cheating and trash talk that does this.  Also, being favored to win from the start of the season or tournament.

This reminds me a lot of a Seth Godin snippet:

The power of lists

The web loves lists almost as much as it loves video.

Consider this list from Chris Brogan.

Or take a look at this PDF

(exclusively published here) from Ed (with editing help from the triiibe).

I’d give you a list of lists, but there are already plenty of those. Your turn to add a list to the list.
