Is TurboTax a mess?

By Tangotiger, 04:17 PM

I was all set to buy Turbo Tax when I came across the scathing reviews at Amazon.

I’m open to other software.  My minimum requirement is that I can import last year’s Turbo Tax file from last year from my hard drive.  Feel free to tell me about your experiences.

I had good luck with TurboTax in 2009, certainly better than my 2008 and 2007 experiences with H&R Block.  Format was easy to use, and I haven’t been audited, which is nice.  I used the web-based version, which I’m assuming is the most up-to-date in terms of bug fixes.

Never bought the physical product, but I’ve used the web version of TurboTax for four years now and never had an issue. I filed my taxes last week and it imported last year’s information without trouble. The only issue I had was that it took a while to load the initial page, probably because of server load. I tried again a half-hour later and breezed through the rest.

Bear in mind I didn’t have any terribly complex issues. I’m not a homeowner, I don’t own stock (other than a 401k), I didn’t sell anything expensive, etc. I did change jobs and move into NYC in the middle of the year (so city taxes applied partially) but I don’t consider those things particularly difficult to deal with. So at least for my relatively straightforward situation, TurboTax was great.

I’ve used TT for years, no problems whatsoever.

I am also a pretty simple return, though, no complicated investment stuff, I don’t own a farm, etc.

Same as #1 and #2. I have used the web-based system for several years without a problem.  I’m not sure I’m getting the best result, but it is fast and relatively easy.  As long as you have your ID it automatically uploads your previous data.  It works better with Federal returns than State returns.

My girlfriend (smart lady, but not numbers-savvy) has used Turbo tax for years and loves it.  Not an overly complicated tax return but she does have a number of deductions and we had the new homeowner credit this year.  I think she uses the actual software, not the web version, but I’m not sure.

I can accept that the online version is far more stable than the CD version.  And, if I stick with TT, the online version would be the appealing choice.

However, can I import the CD file of last year into the online version?

Also, I should point out that it’s THIS YEAR’s version of TT (CD) that seems to be the big problem, not the past years.

One thing, I usually file in mid-late March, so perhaps this sort of thing has been happening in January all along, and I just never tripped over it because I waited a bit…

That said, some of the positive reviews on Amazon looked fishy… while the negative ones had the ring of authenticity…

Tango, the answer appears to be yes: http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/kb/import-and-transfer/import/2293.html

Great, thank you!

And it also lets you do the reverse:
http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/kb/import-and-transfer/import/2295.html

So, the online lets you save the file to your computer.

Good…

I’ve been using THIS year’s version of QuickTax (TT’s Canadian scion) and not only does it run smoothly, but it’s much better designed and more intuitive to use than in past years. Now, I have a very simple return, with only 4-5 simple deductions, but it certainly seems to work for that. Not a bad price point at $16.99 CAD to boot.

I have actually enjoyed this spreadsheet available:

It is nice and free.

After hearing how TT sells your personal info to spam you (many years ago; dunno about their privacy policy nowadays), I used H&R Block’s TaxCut happily for many years. Now I use the cheap, online TaxAct.com. If you can stomach saving your personal info online, it’s great.

i used last years web based TT.  worked great.  i had to do my aunts return which was VERY messy.  all the problems i had were easily found in the Q&A portion of the program.

You should also check out mint.com

Turbo Tax bought them this year. It is a great way to organize finances.

This past weekend, my wife and I used the H&R Block software (cd, not online), as we got it from her dad who stumbled upon it for cheap somewhere a few weeks ago.  We’ve always used turbotax in the past, and wouldn’t have changed except that this was free.  The HR Block software imported last year’s turbotax data fine and seemed to do a good job.  Our taxes aren’t insanely complicated, but we did have child care tax credits, homeowner’s insurance, interest on a mortgage, and an energy tax credit (new windows) to deal with.  No problems incorporating any of those things into the return.
