How to get a GM job (NHL)

By Tangotiger, 01:03 PM

Be an NHL player!  There’s a definite bias in the NHL on that score.  You don’t see it as much in MLB, though being a minor league player might.

So, I’d like to see the categories expanded to include minor leagues in Derek’s study.  And of course, someone should do this for all the major sports.

Tango, what is your general perception of GM quality in the NHL?  Do you tend to approve of their player evaluation and how they appropriate money to talent?  Do most teams seem to have some obvious statistical influence in their front office personnel?

MLB Breakdown:
Legacy: 1 (two if you include Ruben Amaro Jr.)
Pro: 9 (two of which had at least 1000 MLB plate appearances)
Other: 20 (10 of which spent time as scouts)

Jacob: I don’t know enough to comment.

Aaron: can you list your data?  I’d like to see what “pro” is for you.

IIRC, with the exception of Billy Beane, none of the other “Pros” made it to the big leagues, but spent at least a season in the minors.  Additionally, with the exception of maybe Friedman and Alderson, all of the “others” worked their way up the chain, holding various operations positions.

Andy MacPhail - Legacy
Ruben Amaro, Jr. - MLB
Kenny Williams - MLB/Scout
Kevin Towers - Pro/Scout
Frank Wren - Pro/Scout
Michael Hill - Pro/Scout
Doug Melvin - Pro/Scout
Mike Rizzo - Pro/Scout
Billy Beane - Pro/Scout
Jack Zduriencik - Pro/Scout
Jim Hendry - Scout
Walt Jocketty - Scout
Neal Huntington - Scout
John Mozeliak - Scout
Brian Sabean - Scout

Additionally, most of the “Scout only” guys filled other positions during their climb (assistant GM, Minor league director, PR, etc.), and really could be considered “Other” for this exercise, I just felt it was pertinent from a talent evaluation perspective.

Anthopoulos I don’t think was a scout.  This bio seems reasonably accurate:

And you are right about Friedman.

I figured scouting coordinator could fall under the general “scout” heading, but TBH, I’m not sure whether or not a scouting coordinator would do any actual scouting.
