Hit Where Pitched

By Tangotiger, 05:08 PM

Max’s article from a few weeks ago.

(I’m leaving the office in 2 minutes, so I will comment tomorrow.)

Very nice piece by Max.

It would be very interesting to see the relationship between HWP and run value—which he shows in the aggregate—broken down by horizontal location.  Do hitters do better on pitches slightly inside if they pull them or hit them “where they are pitched?” How far outside does a pitch have to be before going the other way is better than hitting it straight?

As for why LHH pull more, I would think a big part of the answer is taking advantage of the 1B-2B hole when runners are on.  If you removed PAs with runner on 1B, I’d guess the LHH/RHH difference in pull% would be smaller.
