Hardball Times Preview Book

By Tangotiger, 11:56 AM

Here are the details.  If you haven’t made any THT purchases, I would suggest making one.

I see THT very much PBS-style: they are fairly non-profit, any money they get goes into the writers, R&D, or getting data.  This book has basically a who’s who of team bloggers, so it’s a great thing to support.

Studes could decide to turn THT into his own personal moneymaker, and for some reason, chooses not to.  I wouldn’t begrudge him if he did, but as long as he doesn’t, it’s extra reason to support THT.

Not only that, but I spend all my time typesetting.  A fool and a masochist, to boot!

I gave THT a donation ($10) and am buying the book via Amazon (through the link above).  I encourage others to do the same.

To round out the purchase for $25 and get free shipping, I’m thinking I’ll buy the BP2008 book.

I like Dan Fox and a few others over there (actually, I think everyone I’ve corresponded with there I like), but I can’t stand BP’s business approach, like here:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/book/?list=all

No mention at all of The Book, Hardball Times, Bill James Handbook, Sabernomics.  Basically, anything that can be in direct competition is ignored completely.  I even wrote to them asking to be listed, and not even a courtesy reply back.  I reply to *everyone* (unless yahoo’s dumped it into my spam folder, and I still go through that folder sometimes, just in case).  I’m talking about from high school students and grad students who are writing sabermetric papers to MLB teams, looking to pick my brain.

I’m as honest and open as I am here, as I am in emails, and am in real-life.  It’s my Howard Stern inspiration.  Probably one reason I appreciate mgl, even though I’ve never met him.  He’s a straight talker.

Anyway, I will continue to dump on BP as I see fit, and will continue to laud them as they earn it (and Fox and Silver earn it alot).
