Friday Mail: Sabermetric licence plate

By Tangotiger, 06:35 PM

Someone:

I plan to buy a new car later this year, and am thinking of getting a new vanity plate.  I’d love a sabermetric one, but the only one I can think of is OBP+SLG.  I kind of like it, as a few folks would get it, but at the same time I hate being a poster for OPS.  Any other suggestions?  (I think WOBA is probably too obscure, and 1.8*OBP+SLG won’t fit.)

Get a Royal blue chopper and a “PECOTA” license plate.

Is “THEBOOK” too simple or obscure?

How about something along the lines of “MLB WAR”? I guess that could be misinterpreted.

“MLBSTATS”? I guess that’s 8 characters… Who knew that seven characters could be so constraining?

How about just a bumper sticker that says “Make WAR, not RBI”?

#4    Jeff Z      (see all posts) 2010/06/04 (Fri) @ 18:52

Correct answer is Tangotiger everywhere except NJ

"Everyone else drools” if you can fit that in.  You can always have that printed in the license plate frame…

#9    NaOH      (see all posts) 2010/06/04 (Fri) @ 19:28

I LUV BJ: That’s for Bill James. What were you thinking it meant?

HOF4ROCK (or Bert)

XFIP: As with WOBA, I don’t think it’s too obscure. If someone follows sabermetrics, they’ll know it.

I like OPS+SLG the best.  It would have the highest recognition rate I’m sure.  And if I saw it, I’d KNOW it was for baseball; WOBA, on a license plate, I’d probably assume was intended to mean something else.

Tango, is the plate for you?  The way you have your post looks like you’re quoting someone else ... but there’s no link.

Ah, “mailbag.” It’s from an anonymous correspondent.

Yup, “UZR”.  Any saber fan will know what it is and it is not ambiguous.  And there will only be a small monthly trademark usage fee…

Mike/15:  That plate would probably get you run off the road in Louisiana (and maybe FL, soon).
