Free Dan Fox!

By Tangotiger, 05:58 PM

In the spirit of Gleeman’s push to get Santana in the rotation (Free Johan Santana), it looks like the Free Dan Fox campaign has worked.  There is something to be said for a pay-for model where the articles are eventually released to the public from the archives.  Everyone benefits to some extent.  And keeping Dan Fox’s work under wraps, while the equally effective work from Walsh, Fast, Kalk, Sheehan et al was there for the taking… well, now, all of it is there for researchers and analysts to go through.

Where exactly was this campaign taking place? I’ve seen no mention of it until now. It is, however, pretty cool for those of us who don’t feel like paying for a BP subscription.

More of a silent campaign.  I’ve mentioned a few times that BP should open the doors to the older stuff, and mention Dan specifically.

I agree that even if they keep doors closed on most of their recent stuff they should open their archive, perhaps using something akin to what many journals do when the have their back issues on JSTOR.  They use some kind of “moving wall,” so that the journal content is available on JSTOR if it is, say, more than 1 year since printing, or more than 3 years (journals differ).

In the case of BP, it would be reasonable to take the restriction off of any article that they published more than 12 months age.  Thus, any article published before December 2006 should be “open” today.  And next month they just move that barrier ahead another month.

That would make a lot of their materials not only accessible but citable—and would benefit BP’s reputation on both accounts.

I agree.  It just being open on google would be a boon.

IIRC, their author agreements give BP exclusive publishing rights for 6 months, but that anything longer and the author is also free to republish.  So, the onus could also be on the authors to force BP to open the doors here on bp.com, or republishing on their own blogs.

Even Nate’s old PECOTA’s, which have zero value today in terms of profiting from, could be valuable to researchers.  I’ve got Marcels going back to 2001 on my site, and I’d gladly generate more if someone wants them.
