Felipe Alou

By Tangotiger, 04:20 PM

I love Felipe:

I think race cost Felipe Alou his shot at Cooperstown because he didn’t get his chance until he was 57. He got hired to manage at an age when most men, even most Hall of Famer managers, have at least one foot out the door. ... To look at it another way, Felipe Alou is one of the greatest managers in baseball history from the age of 57 onward.

Felipe Alou was a minor league coach with the Expos since 1982.  Preceding him to MLB with the Expos were the very experienced Bill Virdon, the somewhat experienced (and well-liked) Buck Rodgers, and the inexplicable (and well-despised) and short-lived Tom Runnells, hand-picked by the otherwise intelligent Dave Dombrowski (who made Alou his bench coach).  Alou’s “fault” in getting to the majors earlier may have been his allegiance to the Expos.  Surely some team would have gone after such an intelligent, well-spoken, former MLB ballplayer?

FWIW, and I don’t remember any specific reasons why, but I thought that Alou was a horrible strategic manager.  But then again, I think that of most managers…

I’ve got to admit, I couldn’t even begin to speculate how teams choose their managers.  I mean have you ever listened to Charlie Manuel for example?  He sounds like he just walked out of the Okefeenoke swamp.  I would think that at the very least you would want a thoughtful, intelligent, well-spoken person to manage your near-billion dollar business.  Maybe Manuel is a great motivator, teacher, is well-respected, and knowledgable by traditional baseball standards.  Who knows?  I certainly don’t.  If you showed him an RE table, my guess is that he would literally boot you out of his office.  Maybe not though.  Omar Minaya sounds like a moron to me and he is considered one the more intelligent GM’s, is he not?

I love Felipe as well.  I wonder how things would have been different had Sabean fired Dusty when he became GM and hired Felipe (of course, Felipe was still toiling for the Expos then).

Anywya, Tango, any thoughts to updating your Felipe and Walks study to cover his Giants years?  FWIW, I thought it was nicely done for Expos players, and from casual perusal, it appears that a number of players elevated their OBP when they joined the Giants under Felipe, like Jose Cruz Jr. and Michael Tucker.
