Fangraphs Live in NYC (L’Alliance Francaise)

By Tangotiger, 01:38 PM

Saturday, Aug 7, 9:00 - 12:00.

There’s a Fangraphs “concert”, with David Appelman, Dave Cameron et al running the show, and special guests, including MGL.  It’s 15$ and it’s being held at L’Alliance Francaise.

Tom kind of buried a lot of the cool names with the “special guests” tag, but seriously - Jonah Keri, Will Leitch, Alex Speier, Michael Silverman, six members of the FanGraphs staff, and of course MGL.  Yeah, I’m helping to put this on and am totally biased, but this is a pretty sweet guest list.

I’ve been to that hall actually.  We saw “La Cantatrice Chauve”, probably close to ten years ago.  Good show, and pretty much every seat in the house is good.  Voice carries pretty well.

Getting a paid crowd of 300+ people, at 9AM, is a big deal, considering that’s what a big-time play was getting on a Saturday night.

I’ll be there representing THT. Waiting to see if I’ll get an upgrade to ‘special guest’.

It will be a thrill to meet mgl and the others.

#4    MGL      (see all posts) 2010/07/20 (Tue) @ 23:34

Yup, I’m shopping now in Bermuda, as we speak, for a new pair of shorts for the concert…

#5    Brian Cartwright      (see all posts) 2010/07/20 (Tue) @ 23:48

So I’m not going to need a suit and tie? (like I actually own one)

I was excited until I read they are stacking the room with a pro-Yankees crowd. smile

I still feel fortunate, to combine two active threads, that I can hold an active baseball conversation in the comments section here.

Why aren’t you doing this at SABR - the same weekend in Atlanta?

#8    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/07/22 (Thu) @ 11:06

Why would Fangraphs need to be under the SABR umbrella?

How would it work anyway?  David would need to put in a request to someone, who then has to approve it (or not), and then yada yada yada…

I’m sure there’s some benefit being under a SABR umbrella, but there’s benefit to not, also.

#9    Chris Dial      (see all posts) 2010/07/22 (Thu) @ 13:32

Pardon?  It doesn’t need to be under SABR’s umbrella *at all*.  I am just suggesting that you have 1000 people, half of whom would be very interested, in addition to media, at the SABR conference.  Just have the party “Near” SABR.  There are other events nearby that do things that aren’t under teh SABR umbrella, but are using the fact that there are 1000 baseball fans on hand specifically for these types of meetings.

It’s your target audience, already gathered for you.

#10    David Cameron      (see all posts) 2010/07/22 (Thu) @ 13:37

We didn’t know the SABR conference was going on that weekend when we planned it.  Not sure if that says more about my lack of connectivity to SABR or their lack of promotion about the event.  Had we known SABR was going on in Atlanta that weekend, that probably would have changed some things.

That’s cool.  It just didn’t make sense.  But not knowing about the convention explains it.  Which is kind of my fault.  Anyway, I wrote a new piece on pitching runs at BTF...watch how dumb *I* get called.

Chris: ah.  I saw you write “at SABR”, and I took it literally.  Had you originally said “near the SABR convention”, then no issue.

I didn’t know that other conferences leverage the SABR conference, and so, yes, great point.  It’s like when prostitutes show up whenever a Republican(*) conference is held.

(*) If you are a Republican, replace that with Tea Party. (**)

(**) If you are a Tea Party-er, then make like a tree.  (***)
