Dwight Evans: “I agree with WPA, Carbo’s HR had more impact than Fisk’s!”

By Tangotiger, 10:25 AM

Or words to that effect:

Bernie Carbo’s home run was bigger than Fisk’s. I’m not taking anything away from Pudge. His home run was great — it was a game-winner — but the game was tied. Carbo’s home run came in the eighth inning with us down by three runs. It was huge. It was the second biggest home run I ever saw, right ahead of Fisk’s.

According to WPA, Carbo’s homerun added 0.44 wins, while Fisk’s added 0.36.

Evans said that Dave Henderson’s is #1, and it added 0.73 wins to that game.

This is the best/coolest/awesomest baseball news I’ve read this week.

Yeah, it’s great!  Someone gives me lip about WPA, all I gotta say is: “Go argue with Dewey.  He gets it.”

====================
we remember game-winners more, but the key hits are often the forgotten ones in the middle. Who had the biggest world-series probability added hit ever? Answer: Hal Smith, 1960, game 7. Yeah, how many fans would give ya THAT one??

I imagine there are a fair amount of people about my age living in the Northeast for whom the Carbo home run is the most exciting thing they ever saw on TV.
