Daily reliever usage charts

By Tangotiger, 09:04 AM

I’d like to see this for every reliever, for every season, as part of his charts:

And more.  Here’s what I propose: For every game, mark the highest gmLI for ANY reliever who entered that game in red, and the gmLI THIS reliever in blue (if he even played).  This way, you can tell how this reliever was used relative to other relievers that game, and if he was even used at all.  Maybe for THIS reliever, have it a blue bar, and the ANY reliever as the red dot.

David Pinto has what you just asked for. Coded it into his day-by-day database.

A couple of things:

1. He notes he uses boLI instead of LI.  This is easily corrected.  I just sent him an email offering him a licence for it.

2. ALL *days*, not just his games, should be shown.  This shows how far apart he comes in, and when he comes in.  So, if you see a gap in-between appearances, and you see alot of high LI in those gaps, you know this pitcher is not trusted by the manager.

3. Graphs are nicer than tables in this case.  (Though, you can have both.)

Agreed on all accounts. He just threw this together, so I’m sure he’ll improve it. Ahh, the joys of the sabermetric circle on the internet. I love that an article gets thrown up on Fangraphs, you ask on your own blog about improvements and then SOMEONE ELSE chips in with adding your suggestions to the original article. Love it.

Yes, absolutely.  This is my favorite part of the internet.  Sometimes I’ll do the work myself, sometimes some else will do it, and I end up exerting overall 10% of the effort and get 100% of the benefit.

Perfect.

Here is my take on Steve’s graph for how Soria is used by the Royals.  Maybe the single red point would be fine, but I am trying to show that he is definitely not being used in the highest leverage situations.

That’s a nice graph.  I was worried it might get too cluttered, as that’s how I was first envisioning it.

Nice graph Jeff.  I like it.  Is there any way to call out Soria without connecting the points with a line?  It kinda implies relationships/hints at data not available.

Another thought, maybe not for this graph, but for a LOOGY (or even RH setup guy) for example, doing the player in question and then a dot for highest Leverage of like handed reliever and highest total (independent of hand).

Here is another possibility I did.  Since the original article was aimed at Royal’s fans, I added the other relievers:

That one, with the dots colored by handedness, might be my favorite.
