I think what could be interesting here is that the Cardinals’ GM may not be the most important executive as far as baseball operations are concerned. They could end up with a structure very different from most major league front offices.

Agreement with #3.  It would seem a logical and likely conclusion that the new GM will not have carte blanche ability to purge the farm system as he sees fit for midseason rentals or the like.  I believe DeWitt still awakens with night sweats thinking about the money blown on the Mark Mulder trade.
