I never liked Bochy much when he was the Pads manager and I think they quickly got rid of him when they “went sabermetric.”
That move sounded like a simple “brain freeze” which can happen to anyone, as opposed to not understanding a complex situation, like an IBB or bunt situation, or not bringing in a good reliever in a high leverage situation or the converse. I’m not sure which is worse.
I wonder how he responded when someone asked him about that move in the post-game interview (assuming that someone did)? Did he, or would he, just admit that he made a mistake, or would he be defensive and make up some excuse? Also, isn’t that what bench and other coaches are for? Shouldn’t someone on the bench have said, “Hey Skip, if you pinch hit for Davis, they are just going to walk the guy.”
