Bill James Historical Abstract - the first one
I loved the one from 1986/88. You can buy it real cheap (there’s also a link to the hardcover version at the bottom, and it’s also real cheap). His HOF book is also cheap, and I recommend it highly. There’s also alot of cheap version of his annual abstracts. Really, for you guys who never read them, do yourself a favor and grab one. Or at least go to the library.

That triggered a memory. The book came out on Christmas Day, 1986 for some reason. This was my first Christmas as a father and we were picking up my parents at the airport that day, but I was really ticked I couldn’t rush off to Tower Books (which was open Christmas Day) and get my copy the first day it came out.
And the book repaid every bit of nervous energy I expended, too. Though anytime someone says they’ve discovered the “truth” about sabermetrics, please read Mr. James’s rankings in the book.
