Bill James Baseball IQ app

By , 06:48 PM

I downloaded Bill James Baseball IQ onto my iphone (I don’t think it is available on droid phones, but I’m not sure). Here is the web site for the app on Acta Sports:

http://www.actasports.com/titles/bill_james_baseball_iq_app/

It is pretty cool. You can read a description and see some screen captures on the above site, but basically it allows you to see heat maps and color maps of batters and pitchers (in all combinations, counts, situations, etc.) for K zone, batted balls, pitch type, etc.

Best of all, the app is free! Seems to me that they could have charged for this one, but I know nothing about the best way to make money from apps. It also seems like they could use these graphics more often on TV broadcasts.

Anyway, give it a try and see what you think…

There’s a promotional video for those who don’t have an Apple mobile device.

I seem to remember there was some issue with the K-zone thing from a few months ago.  Let me go find that thread…

Here was that discussion:

Not getting anything when I try to view hit location charts, has anyone else tried this?

Tested on both iPhone and iPad it works for me. When I first launched the app it needed 30 seconds or so to download data, but after that all the available categories displayed charts. If you continue to see issues, it can’t hurt to delete/re-install the app since that would completely refresh everything.

Odd, I was able to get hit charts for some players, but not others.  Michael Cuddyer, yes.  Joe Mauer, no.  NaOH, can you try viewing the Hit Location chart for Mauer, and let me know what you get?

Same results here as you, Greg. I guess I managed to only try with working player data when I initially tested. The hiccup for players like Mauer makes me wonder if the team data is correct when viewing the Hit Locator chart for the Twins as a team.

Greg, NaOH.

Try Mauer again, we had a minor data issue. Post here again if you find anyone else who doesnt return results so we can track it down.

Thanks!

Yep, it’s working now. I launched the app, it downloaded new data automatically, and Mauer charts loaded. Thanks.

Works now for me as well.  Thanks for the quick action!

I downloaded the app and it does not work for me at all. I have the IPhone 4.3.3. The app will download the player data but then crashes. Everytime I try open the app I get the AnericanEagle page, then the app retrieves data and then crashes. I called AmericanEagle and they said they would do an update for the app because they located an issue with the app for my version of the IPhone. So far no update.

#11/Dennis: The app was updated earlier this week to version 1.03, and it’s not clear when exactly you installed the app. You can check your version by going to Settings > General > Usage > [tap Show All Apps, if necessary] > select Baseball IQ.

If you have an earlier version, open the App Store and the update should be available for you to install. If you already have the current version, the easiest fix to attempt is deleting the app and re-downloading it from the App Store.

#12/ I downloaded the app 1.03 and got the problems I described above. I called AmericanEagle and spoke to someone on Wednesday of this week and they did some tests and confirmed there were issues with the app for my version of the IPhone (4.3.3). When they used the same version of the phone j have they got the same problems (when the app is opened you get the AmericanEagle page, then the Baseball IQ updates, and then the app crashes). The person at AmericanEagle I spoke to said they would do another update so that people with my version of the IPhone could use the app. I was told it could take a couple of days. Do you know when I can expect the update? I really love the app. I had it last year and it was great (and never had problems with it). FYI, I downloaded the app from itunes again today and got the same issues.

Sounds like the issue Dennis/13 had has been fixed. An update was released today and the listed changes are simply “Fixes for devices on iOS 4.3.”
