By Tangotiger, 01:44 PM

Non-sports post.

The best in freeware, all nicely catalogued and reviewed.

My freeware faves:

-Media Player Classic: Lite-version of Windows media player. Will playback almost any video format provided you have the correct codecs installed.

-Foobar2000: Small audio player/converter that supports all popular audio formats (plugins needed for some codecs). It supports lossless codecs like FLAC, Monkey’s Audio, WavPack, Shorten and lossy codecs like mp3, mp4, musepak, ogg vorbis.

-FFDshow: Free codec that decodes/encodes pretty much any video format, and most audio formats.

-ImgBurn: Small efficient program for burning CD’s/DVD’s.

-DVD Shrink: Freeware program that decrypts DVD movies so you can back them up in case you lose or damage your original DVD’s. You can make 1:1 copies (you’ll need blank dual-layer discs for 1:1 copies) or you can re-encode your DVD so it fits on a blank single layer DVD. Make sure you download version 3.2.0.15, not the newer versions of the program that do not decrypt the copy protection. Also, I only recommend using Verbatim dual-layer discs. I’ve had nothing but problems with all other brands of dual layer DVD’s. Single layer DVD’s are much more forgiving and reliable. Also, make sure it is DVD+R DL not DVD-R DL. A lost of drives don’t support DVD-R DL.

-Exact Audio Copy: Only free program that will give you perfect copies of your audio CD’s.

-VirtualDub: Video editor/converter. Has plenty of features but is not very user friendly. I usually use TMPGEnc (not free) for editing video.

-DVD Flick: Nice program for authoring DVD video. Again, I prefer TMPGEnc (not free).

-Spybot: Best antivirus program. AVG Free is also pretty good.

-Easeus ToDo Backup: Free and easy to use disk backup/cloning program. Pretty much does everything the expensive programs (Acronis, Norton Ghost) do.

-WinRar: Not freeware, but the program is still 100% operable when the trial period expires. Create your own zip and rar archives and extract files from most archive formats.

-Eusing Free Registry Cleaner: Be careful with this program. If you are unsure about deleting something then just leave it. The program works better with Windows XP, but you can still use it in Vista and Window 7.
