Before hitting Submit: Copy/paste your post

By Tangotiger, 02:07 PM

On more than one occasion, I have hit SUBMIT, only to see my post vanish into hyperspace.  I don’t know the reason.  It’s like the blogging software I am using, but it could be anything really.  This has affected several among you.

The only suggestion I have: before you hit SUBMIT, copy/paste your post (or write it in Notepad, and copy/paste from there to here).  If you are lucky, it might still be in your browser history and you can hit BACK.

Just be careful…

I’ve been doing that for a couple of years now.  On my work computer I always have to compose the post twice, on my home computer it always works the first time.

I’m also without an auto-save feature on my blogging software. I always write any posts longer than 500 words in Word or something similar. I’ve lost a few too many lost thousand-word pieces.

Good advice, although I should note that in my 7+ years of using Blogger this has never happened to me.

I have lost posts too, so I sometimes copy a long post before submitting.

I used to lose posts all the time on ESPN since sometimes it would ask me to re-login, blanking out the comment I had typed.

Good advice.  I have to remember that, at least for longer posts.  I’ve had a few of them vanish in the last several months.

I have had several comments vanish on this blog. As far as I was able to determine what I was doing differently, on the screen when I have to type captcha code, if I press “ENTER” afterwards, I’m more likely than not to lose the post. If I press submit with my mouse, it will go through. Analyzing the same problem on some other sites, I found that I need to have cursor positioned in text window, if it was in title field, uploaded file field or similar, there was a chance that my message will disappear.

I run into the problem most when I add a lot of links or HTML code to the post. Sometimes just putting a blockquote tag in will do it. When it’s just plain text, I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem.

I would love to see Tom take his blog over to SB Nation.  I think the discussions would be much easier to follow and the extra exposure would benefit the baseball community.  I’m sure Tom (and mgl) have become comfortable here, but there is nothing they couldn’t do at SBN that they can do here and that includes “control” issues.  I’m sure SBN would love to have them.

The community here has been great to us.  I don’t know that I can deal with 10x more commenters at SBN, not while keeping my day job.

The success of this blog, whatever success that is, is dependent on two important things:
1. me and MGL interacting with the readers
2. the readers coming here and wanting to contribute as much as they have

Moving to SBN would mean that #1 would go down, or I’d have to book an extra hour or two to replying to readers.

As for #2, well, our regular readers here may not have the patience of time to contribute and read as they normally have.

Basically, we’ve got a pretty good thing going here.  It’s like asking Vlad to not be so aggressive swinging.  You’d think you can fix one chink in the armor, when you are actually removing his armor.

That said, if SBN wants us, and I can keep making this a success and the readers want to follow me, then I’m all ears.

I think SBN’s pages are horrible, frankly.  While I assume there is some site-to-site variation, most of the ones I visit have too few items on the front page, too many pictures, too wide of sidebars, and difficult to access archives.  Other than that, it’s the perfect forum for discussions.
