Bases per PA, part 2

By Tangotiger, 07:26 AM

Last year, Patriot gave us the history of the bases per PA (or per out) metric, including presenting some data I gave him:

Event Average Bases
Walk 1.39
Hit Batter 1.48
Single 1.83
Double 3.23
Triple 4.46
Home Run 5.41
Stolen Base 1.10

Colin gets into the nuts-and-bolts of exactly where those numbers came from.  I think these two articles are required reading for anyone contemplating creating a metric, or understanding existing metrics.

I’d put those two articles front and center in any SABR 101 course as required reading.

I have added a little section at the top of every page (to the right of the Amazon “The Book” image) that links to this thread.

I think if the newbies were to read Patriot’s and Colin’s primers on the topic, 50% of the sabermetric pollution would disappear.

Encourage everyone to read those two articles.
