Cliff Lee
Now this is a nice way to show it:
It took me a minute or two to understand (I’m slow, but I get there eventually). The box inside with the blue balls has nothing to do with the red balls. We see “on average” where each ball goes. The red balls tell you how much they move, and their speed.
Now, it’s going to be limiting. Pitchers don’t throw down the middle, but, on average, they do. Perhaps a better thing is to look for two central points, rather than one, but, that’s alot more work. And if two, why not 3 or 4? Or why not just make it continuous? (Which he does in the later charts in the article.) But then, you can’t put all his pitches in the same chart. Basically, you set your constraints, and do your best within those self-imposed limits.
I like the red balls though. Maybe size them by speed of pitch.
Anyway, great stuff overall.
