Child Rapists

By Tangotiger, 01:06 PM

Washington Post.

Most egregious was the 2002 incident in which a 28-year-old graduate assistant returning to the football facility was surprised to see the lights and shower on at 9:30 p.m. According to the grand jury, “he saw a naked boy . . . whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky.” This would have been a good time to dial 911, but at no point were police or child welfare authorities notified. The graduate assistant told head football coach Joe Paterno, who told Mr. Curley, who brought in Mr. Schultz with the result that Mr. Sandusky was instructed — big deal — not to bring youth to the campus. Mr. Sandusky, his emeritus status at Penn State unchanged, continued his youth volunteer work, and in 2007, according to the grand jury, he victimized another boy.

NY Times.

This is what Israel calls “the delusion that the ability to win football games indicates anything at all about your character or intelligence other than that you can win football games.”

Poz.

Joe Paterno has also been ripped in various places for not doing enough, for not reporting the incident to the police himself, for not stopping a longtime coach who, if the charges are true, is a monster. I have heard from many, many people who have strong opinions about Paterno and have reached conclusions, and I understand.

But this is where my thoughts trail off… I’m writing a book about Joe Paterno. I need time. This story, for me at least, needs time.
...
There will be a lot written about Penn State and Paterno and this stomach-churning story over the next while. I’ll read, but I won’t write. Not yet. In time, I will. My old friend Buck O’Neil always used to say that what you do in the dark will come to light. As a writer, it’s dark outside.

Edmund Burke:

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing

It is simply shocking that witnessing a crime (or something serious that may be a crime) means that the witness does something other than directly call 911.  If you are not going to call 911 in this case, when will you call 911?  If someone hits your car, you probably call 911.
