Changing the rules… in little-league pickup games
We all have rules we change in baseball if we can’t field 9. For example, if you only have 8, the hitting team provides the catcher. If you only have 5 players, the foul line goes up 2B.
Anyway, I’m playing with my kid and 9 other kids, between the ages of 7 and 12, and we had to make some rules on the spot. I’m pitcher for both teams. I know that the kids can barely throw the ball from 3B to 2B, much less to 1B. So, my rules were:
- a ball hit in the infield was a max one-base advance,
- a ball hit to the outfield means you can run as much as you can until the ball is thrown back in the infield, at which point you can only try to advance if you are in the middle of the bases,
- everyone gets to bat at least once, and max twice, in each inning, and 3 outs are in play
- and we can call strikes (and 3 strikes for strikeout) for the older kids, but no walks.
So, I happen to throw a tennis ball (that’s what we were using) and hit the kid who had two strikes. And what does he say? “The count resets to 0-0” !!! I laughed inside.
