Can a closer be effective throwing 89 mph fastballs only?
I don’t remember watching him much prior to this year, but his historical numbers are decent for a closer. This year though, I have watched him a lot. He seems to throw almost nothing but fastballs on the outside part of the plate. And his fastballs are only in the high 80’s and low 90’s. I can’t imgagine how any pitcher can be effective like that. In today’s Cub game, he came in in the 9th and threw 17 or 18 fastballs in a row starting with the first pitch of the inning. All of them but one (the hit by Theriot) were on the outside part of the plate. Before the inning started, I mentioned to my son that “Cordero throws nothing but outside fastballs.” If a major legaue batter basically knows what he is getting AND the location, can a pitcher NOT get hammered? His fastball today was 88 to 92, mostly around 89.
Anyone familiar with Chad Cordero (not the “good” Cordero)?
