Bleg: Proposed rule changes in the NHL
The standard rule change would be fighting in the NHL. But, in the playoffs, you just don’t see fighting. Basically, the players police themselves so well (i.e., coaches don’t put in players on the ice for the sole purpose of intimidation), that to outright ban it (i.e., ejection) may have unintended consequences.
So, let’s look at it from the playoff perspective, and what would you change, or consider changing? For me, the one that stands out is the end of game skirmishes in blowouts. There is zero disincentive for acting like an a$$hole at the end of a game. Soccer does it right with their yellow cards and red cards. I love that system. You act like an a$$hole, and you get a yellow card. Act like that twice, or act like a complete a$$hole once, and you get a red card. Red card = ejection, plus banned from the next game. Great system. (If we tie this in to the regular season, I’d make the equivalents as one playoff game = 3 or 4 regular season games.)
I don’t like the offside call, once the puck has crossed back into the neutral zone. Watch that play, and tell me it’s not a downer. Only call that play if the puck crosses back over the center line (i.e., the blue line floats back for an offside call).
Any disincentive to dump-and-chase would be welcomed.
