BIS v PITCHf/x

By Tangotiger, 09:10 AM

David at Fangraphs takes a look at how well the two systems matchup on pitch classification.  It would seem to me that one thing they could do is get an inventory of pitches that each pitcher is throwing, from the pitcher himself.  Then, you can run the algorithm against that set.  For Perez, it seems that BIS is aware of what he claims to throw, while PITCHf/x is presuming that what Perez calls a cutter is either a fastball or slider (or at least *behaves* like it).  Come to think of it, what we are really after is behaviour, not intent.  Likely the better pitcher you are, the more that the algorithm will synch up to your actual repertoire.
