Banning teams
In soccer, they would, and have, banished teams from the upper leagues to the lower leagues for serious infractions (including game-fixing). College has that as well. The Olympics also has team penalties for individual infractions.
In major pro sports in North America though? They all talk the talk, but when it comes time to walk that walk, they all stand in a spot shuffling their feet. Imagine a steroid test that would retroactively count as a forfeit all games played by that player. Or simply deducting 10 wins. Too draconian? Ok, how about one measly win? And then a second positive test for any player on that team is two additional wins. And so on. Too harsh? Well, I guess it’s not that big a deal.
How about in addition to that, losing draft picks, or forcing them to pick last in each round. Even the NHL has made a team forfeit its entire draft on a violation (talking to opponent already under contract). Isn’t steroids worse than that? Too harsh? Well, I guess it’s not that big a deal.
