Banning spit (smokeless) tobacco
Alex has a long article, which he concludes:
There’s simply no chance that the Players Association would ever agree to a tobacco ban, and as long as tobacco is a legal substance that does not affect how well someone plays baseball, a tobacco ban is simply not something I can support.
Tobacco is a legal product. So is alcohol. Cigarettes, cigars, beer, and wine are nowhere to be found on the field of play. Neither will we find pizza, hot dogs, or filet mignon.
The only things allowed it seems is sunflower seeds, water, gatorade and smokeless tobacco. We’ve all watched Sesame Street haven’t we? We know which one doesn’t belong.
I see no reason that MLB can’t ban smokeless tobacco from the field of play. The slow pace at changing something so simple is indicative of everything that is wrong with baseball, that tradition has a stranglehold over reason.
