Assists per…

By Tangotiger, 03:47 PM

There are many way to get a rate stat using assists in the numerator.

You can do your A per your G+A.
You can do your A per team G while you were on the ice.
You can do A per team G while you were on the ice minus your G.
You can do A per team SH while you were on the ice minus your SH.  (I think this is what this fellow is doing.)
You can do A per A+Giveaways.
You can do A per ice time.

And of course, for each, you can adjust further for team.

There is a bunch of different ways to do this.  Each will let you infer something different, to some extent.  It’s a matter of trying to come up with the proper “opportunity space”.  I’m not sure which is the best way to do it.

When I was 12 years old or so, I did the third one above.  I remember Denis Savard assisting on 75% of his teammates goals.  Gretzky was very high as well.  I thought it was a decent enough way to do it.
