“Ask me next year”
Is it really so hard to ask the Holy Writers that when they vote for the HOF that they are given a choice of “Absolutely, yes”, “Definitely, not”, “Ehhh, ask me next year”. Why do the writers who did not vote Yes for Dwight Evans and Lou Whitaker need to depend on the writers who did vote Yes for those players to see their names on the ballot the following year? How does that make any sense? It doesn’t.
Or, why not do what the Hall of Merit does: submit an ORDERED list of 10 or 15 players (no blanks), and then the top two (or three) votegetters get into the HOF. And no one needs to drop off the ballot for next year. It seems that we need to create a limited ballot because the Holy Writers want the list whittled down for them because they don’t want to take the process as seriously as the Hall of Merit voters do.
While Jack Morris, Dennis Martinez, Frank Tanana, Orel Hershiser, and Dan Quisenberry should always be considered around an equal amount of time, because of the vagaries of the system, only Jack Morris gets to be considered. No, of course that makes no sense either. But, the Hall of Fame doesn’t care about that. And the Holy Writers don’t care about that either.
This is a job for historians who care about history. Give them this job, and let them set the rules.
