AJ Burnett?
Apparently, there’s a little disagreement between Barra and Sheehan on AJ Burnett and his “case” for the rotation.
But this is not about AJ. His ERA is the same as his FIP. His BABIP is a bit better than league average, but he’s pitching a bit worse with men on base. Basically, his numbers represent him pretty well, and he’s not good. He’d be a 4th starter on an average team.
The problem is Nova and Hughes. Their numbers on the surface don’t look too good, but they’re managing to be successful. How? Nova has allowed all his HR as solo HR. Hughes pitches better with men on base than bases empty. All these things we shouldn’t expect to continue. So, the issue is not AJ, but the other two guys.
AJ is not good, while the other two? Well, the book is still out.
