TW Telecom

By Tangotiger, 12:49 PM

I have received 9 Scouting Report ballots from a single IP address, which is owned by TW Telecom based in Colorado.  All of the ballots resulted in no data being transferred over.  These are the only ballots affected in the 1300+ I currently have.  That’s more than a coincidence.

If your service provider is TW Telecom, please send me an email at tom~tangotiger~net (replacing the ~ with the appropriate character) so we can test this.

Thanks, Tom

Stupid Windows “Features”

By Tangotiger, 10:52 AM

Incredibly, these are not bugs but design features.  This happens to me all the time, whereby I hold the SHIFT key, think about something, and if I think too long, the CAPS lock turns on and stays on.  Then, I have to remember how to turn it off (answer: hold both SHIFT keys to cancel).  Anyway, here’s how to turn this feature off.  That site has more stuff, which I will enjoy looking at.

If you are the Microsoft designer that actually created this function, or if you are the Microsoft Quality Control that actually let this go through, please speak up.  Obviously, there must be a good reason that you did this.

FTP program

By Tangotiger, 11:34 AM

Retrosheet noted that after transferring half a million files, Ipswitch caused a mismatch in the filenames and file contents of several of those files.  That’s a good success rate, but not the 100% that is needed.

Can you guys share your success stories in the FTP software that you use.  I’m talking about moving tens of thousands of files at a time.  I know I time out alot with Ipswitch, and I move just a few thousand files at a time.  In terms of cost, I’d say anything under 50$ would be ok, though free is always preferred.

I have re-required that you enter the text in the image, when submitting comments.  I’ve been wasting too much time moderating comments.  Thanks…

Web Admin: Adding Categories

By Tangotiger, 11:59 AM

If you go here, this will show you all the categories that each thread can be flagged with.  I try to do a good job with my more recent posts, and I update MGL’s threads as well.  However, for the older posts, I probably didn’t go a good enough job, especially for those that should have been flagged as “Ball_Tracking” (mostly because I hadn’t created that category until several months ago).

My favor: whenever you go through one of the older threads, and notice that the Category listing for that thread (which you can see at the bottom of the main blog entry) should have an extra category or two added, just post a comment in that thread, like:

Add Category: Ball_Tracking, Streaks

or whatnot.  Subsequently, I’ll make the update.

Thanks…

File listing dump

By Tangotiger, 01:44 PM

The main page to Tangotiger.net doesn’t necessarily have all the file listing on my site.  It has most, but every now and then, I forget to update it.  Here then is the complete listing:

Minor Site Update

By Tangotiger, 09:13 PM

At the bottom of the main page, you will see two RSS feeds: one for the summary of the blog post, the other that includes the “read more”.  In either case, clicking an article in the feed will also bring up the comments.

At the top of the main page, you will see a link that says “I only want to see the Baseball Links”.  This will bypass all the non-baseball posts.

If there’s any other changes you want to see, let me know.  For example, if some of you heavy hitters want to become contributors, we can set that up.  If you want to have a “news only” section, we can do that too, etc.  Let me know what you think.

Easy search for Firefox

By Tangotiger, 01:35 PM

This is real sweet, if you have Firefox.  Install the extension in the link.  Restart Firefox.  Then, simply hover your mouse over the search box on my blog, right-click, and select “Add to search bar”.  That’s it!  Then, go to your other favorite websites, like baseball-reference, and whatnot, and do the same thing.  Real sweet.

Small Site Updates

By Tangotiger, 03:04 PM

I have installed a new spam-blocker.  The result is:
1. You no longer have to type in the “image” verification words.
2. You no longer must preview your post first (hit submit right away).  Preview is still optional.
3. BUT, it looks like it takes longer to post, an extra 5 seconds or so.

If you think the performance is not worth the changes, I can revert back.  Feel free to post your yay or nays here.

Google Trends

By Tangotiger, 04:29 PM

Google lets you track search words, by country, by time period.  This is for Canada, where the search word HOCKEY stands out far above the other three sports, year-round.  On the other hand, USA follows a very time-sensitive pattern.  The Super Bowl and basketball’s March Madness seems to top the bill.  You can put any words you want in there.  Good waste of time.

Searching the site

By Tangotiger, 11:55 AM

At the top right, you will see two different search boxes.  The first one is provided by the blog software that runs this site.  If you know what you are looking for, that’d be the best one to choose.  The other one is provided by Google, which lets you search either this blog, my site, or the web.

People who read this site came from…

By Tangotiger, 01:26 PM

In true Amazon fashion, this is a listing of the referrers to our site (excluding search engines).  The thinking is that you may enjoy some of the sites that readers of this site came from.  The biggest “friend of ours” for 2006 (and 2005) is The Hardball Times.

Blog Update: Categories Added

By Tangotiger, 02:17 PM

If you page down to the bottom of this page, in the “Recent Comments” box, you will see a link called “All Categories”.  This will give you a link to all blog entries, in a structured order.

As well, every blog entry has a category link associated to it.  Clicking that will bring you a page with all blog entries within that category.  This should help with searching.

Text-based searching will be added in the near/far-future.
